Bring the Family to Farmfair
How much does an adult pig weigh? How much wool can a sheep produce each year? How long does it take to harvest a field of canola? Get the answers to these questions and more at the Farmtastic Fun Weekend at Farmfair International from November 11 – 12.
Why learn about agriculture?
Children are interested in it! Whether your family has never been to a farm or you live on one, there is something new for kids to learn and do at Farmfair. With all the different activities available, families can learn more about the farms and industries that provide food, textiles, materials and other building blocks of kids lives.
Learning about agriculture allows children and families of all ages to and learn about where it comes from. It also provides perspective on the important work that happens at each step to put food in the grocery stores and on our plates.
Something for everyone (yes, even you)
If your family is full of future veterinarians, artists, cowgirls or scientists, there’s an activity at the Farmtastic Fun Weekend for them. And parents too!
1. Animal lovers
Families can say hello to horses and cattle that will be shown during Farmfair International. See if you can spot any blue ribbon winners! Other animals can be found in the Farmtastic petting zoo, where kids can interact and play with furry and feathered farm friends.
Mr. Potato Head comes to life at the Farmtastic Fun Weekend – kids can create their own using real potatoes! Other activities for the artistically inclined include candle making with beeswax and colouring life-sized fiberglass cows.
3. Action fans
For any little ones inspired by the action at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, the Farmtastic Fun Weekend offers kids the chance to try their skills at kid-friendly roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Families can also watch the different exciting competitions at Farmfair, like the Heavy Horse Pull or the Stock Dog Competition. Watch as amazing canines herd sheep through obstacles and into their pen with only whistles and verbal commands from their owners!
4. Trivia Experts
Test your knowledge by participating in the Exploring Agriculture activity. Families up to the challenge can explore the Edmonton EXPO Centre finding clues and answering trivia questions to learn more about agriculture and win amazing prizes.
5. Junior Gardeners
Crush canola, grind corn, plant lettuce and more! Did you know the average farm size in Alberta is 1,168 acres?! Get a taste of what it’s like to be a farmer and all the work that goes into your food!
